Story:
Nur Ali is the first Pakistani to become a professional racing driver, with career highlights that include being a former two-time Southwest Formula Mazda Series Champion and racing in the A1 Grand Prix series for Team Pakistan (slides).
In an interview, he tells: "In the Pakistani community racing is so out in left field. We didn’t know anything about it, so I didn’t even know you could race as a child. I had the passion of speed instilled in me as a 4-year-old living in Hamburg, Germany, watching F1 on TV and being driven around by my parents on the German Autobahn. The same continued when we moved to the United States in the early ‘80s, only difference being F1 was replaced by NASCAR on TV, and the German Autobahn without speed limits was replaced by the U.S. Interstate system that had speed limits of 55 mph.
“My father always told me that I could explore racing as a career option, but I had to get my college degree first. I got my degree from American University in 1998 at the age of 23. Then, I started researching, found Skip Barber Racing School in Ohio, formed a team with my college roommate and his mom, found a mechanic at my local dealership, John Morris, and the rest is history."
In 2004, Nur raced as Team Pakistan in the A1 Grand Prix. He then became quickly known as the official face of Pakistani motorsports.
His family traveled to Lahore, where Nur Ali was unveiled as Pakistan’s driver in front of thousands of guests at the historic Lahore Fort. Pakistani President Pervez Musharaf attended and called Ali “the pioneer of motor racing in Pakistan.”
“It was one of the highlights of my life,” Ali said.
"I went from a no-namer from Euless, Texas, to a household name in Pakistan overnight."
