The Disco influence in Pakistan reached its peak in the early 1980s with the fusion of disco instrumentals, inspired by Western pop culture, with Pakistani music sang in Urdu and Punjabi.
Nazia Hassan and Zoheb Hassan are siblings and the duo who became a household name in the world of Pop and Disco in Pakistan. “Disco Deewane” is the album that was released in Pakistan in 1981 by the pioneering duo, which popularized the genre in the country as well as in India and Bangladesh. The debut album led Nazia Hassan to overnight fame with record sales. In South Asia, where the music industry was previously dominated by filmi Bollywood soundtracks, Disco Deewaane was the first non-soundtrack album to become a major success across the region, paving the way for the emergence of independent Pakistani and Indian pop music artists.
Unfortunately, Nazia Hassan lived a short life and passed away from cancer at the age of 35. Her death was a shock to her fans and the music industry, as she was still very popular and had many upcoming projects in the pipeline. Undoubtedly, Nazia Hassan's influence in South Asia’s music industry is still celebrated today.
